The Marshalls Energy Company (MEC) is launching a campaign to detect and prevent meter tampering and illegal power connections in Majuro, Ebeye, Jaluit and Wotje. The company is deploying a team of inspectors, technicians, and experts to conduct surprise checks on households and businesses around Majuro initially, with plans to expand their operations to the other islands in the coming months.

Regrettably, there are still individuals and businesses in our communities who engage in dishonest practices, attempting to manipulate their meters or tap into power illegally. These actions not only endanger their own safety but also compromise the operational efficiency of MEC’s and KAJUR’s entire power networks. Meter tampering and illegal power connections are serious offenses that can result in injury, fire hazards, power outages, and damage to electrical equipment.

To combat this ongoing and growing problem, MEC is taking resolute steps to crack down on meter tampering and illegal connections. Effective immediately, any individuals, buildings or businesses discovered engaging in these activities will face immediate disconnection without prior notice given by MEC or KAJUR.

Additionally, culprits caught tampering with their meters or making illegal connections will be subject to hefty fines and back billing charges for electricity consumed but not paid for.  These fines and charges must be paid in full prior to the reconnection of electricity services. The amount to be paid will be a minimum of $1,500 and may increase up to $15,000 based on the severity of the offense. Furthermore, MEC reserves the right to take legal action against those responsible.

MEC urges customers to promptly report any suspicious activity or evidence of meter tampering or illegal power connections to its numbers at 625-3828 on Majuro and 329-3799 on Ebeye. MEC assures that the identity of the informants will be kept confidential and that they will be rewarded for their cooperation.

MEC is committed to delivering safe, reliable, and affordable electricity to the people of Majuro, Ebeye, Jaluit and Wotje.

MEC and KAJUR thank their customers for their support and cooperation in this campaign.
