MEC DIESEL GENERATING STATIONS

The Marshalls Energy Company (MEC) is the major provider of electrical energy in the Marshall Islands and operates a number of independent electricity supply systems throughout the country, of which the largest system is supplying Majuro. The Majuro system has a (2023) recorded maximum demand of around 9.8 Megawatts, with a daily average of 9.0 Megawatts. Continued demand growth has slowed in recent years due to tariff increases brought about by fluctuations in the world price for oil, but it is looking to continue to grow to a potential of 14.0MW over the next 3-4 years due to planned developments in the commercial sector.

The Marshalls Energy Company operates smaller diesel power stations outside of Majuro, with the largest of these situated on Ebeye Island, in Kwajalein Atoll, which has a present demand of 2.4 Megawatts. Other diesel power stations are situated on Jaluit Atoll, Wotje Atoll and Rongrong Island, with current demands of 100 kilowatt, 90 kilowatt and 15 kilowatt respectively.

The Marshalls Energy Company installed 3045 solar home systems (SHS) to families residing amongst the remaining atolls. Each SHS system has a capacity of 200W and were provided by multiple international donors. Additional larger systems ranging in size from 6kW up to 16kW were installed at various school facilities on some atolls.

Apart from generating electricity from diesel and solar installations, MEC is also the distributor of LPG gas throughout the Marshall Islands with a 33,000 pound bulk storage capacity, which is decantered into smaller bottles. The Company also operates the largest fuel farm facility comprising 6 million US gallons of diesel fuel, supplying the Company’s diesel power stations as well as sales to International vessels and other commercial enterprises such as fishing companies as well as the domestic shipping and transport markets.

The following sections provide a brief description of MEC’s operating facilities.

MAJURO DIESEL POWER STATION 1

The Majuro diesel power station 1 was commissioned in 1984. It is the smaller of MEC’s two power stations servicing Majuro.

A total of five diesel generators are installed in the station, comprising of four original Peilstik generators and in 1992 a single Caterpillar generator was added.

MAJURO DIESEL POWER STATION 2

The Majuro diesel power station 2 was commissioned in 1999 and is the largest of all of MEC’s power stations. The station has two Deutz diesel generators installed with the station having provision for a third generator.

EBEYE DIESEL POWER STATION

The Ebeye diesel power station located in Kwajalein Atoll was commissioned in 1984 and provides electricity for Ebeye Island.

The station, in its current configuration, has a total of four diesel generators installed, comprising four Cummins generators.

RONGRONG DIESEL POWER STATION

The Rongrong diesel power station located on Rongrong Island, within Majuro Atoll, was commissioned in January 2003. The station currently supplies a boarding school and six houses on the island. The station originally had two containerized Caterpillar Olympian diesel generators installed.

WOTJE DIESEL POWER STATION

The Wotje diesel power station located on Wotje Atoll was commissioned in September 2003 to provide electricity supplies to the atoll. The station has two Wärtsilä UD25 diesel generators installed with the provision for a third generator in the station.

JALUIT DIESEL POWER STATION

The Jaluit diesel power station located on Jaluit Atoll was commissioned in December 1991. Apart from providing electricity services to the local community, the Company also operates a small hotel on the island. The station has two Wärtsilä diesel generators installed with the provision for a third generator.
