Marshalls Energy Company (MEC) is proud to announce the launch of its groundbreaking Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) project, funded with grant funds from the Asian Development Bank. This project marks a significant milestone in MEC’s journey toward a smarter, more efficient energy future.
The AMI project, set to revolutionize the energy landscape in the Marshall Islands, aims to achieve several key objectives:
- Establishment of an energy balance system through the installation of smart meters at feeders, high voltage circuit breakers, distribution transformers, and large customers.
- Utilization of the energy balance system to estimate technical and commercial losses, identify high-loss areas for targeted actions, and ensure revenue protection by including large customers in the AMI project.
- Collection of supply quality and reliability-related information and analytics to inform actions for improvement.
- Identification of areas of high losses allowing for the determination of technical and commercial loss values for targeted actions.
The core functionalities of the AMI system are designed to provide comprehensive data and analytics, including:
- Interval consumption and profile data recording at distribution transformer and high-revenue customer levels.
- Analytics and anomaly reports to highlight unusual behavior.
- Remote and on-demand real-time reads from smart meters.
- Support in the estimation of reliability indicators such as SAIDI and SAIFI.
- Assessment of meter data for development of electricity balance system and losses identification.
- Meter loss of supply detection (last gasp/dying gasp) to help develop an Outage Management System (OMS) to detect outages in the network and prioritize supply restoration.
- Import/export metering to meet future requirements when upcoming solar PV plants start injecting electricity into the grid.
- Remote time of use (TOU) configuration for tariff studies and analysis.
MEC aims to complete installation of all 500 smart meters for the AMI project by June 30, 2024.
MEC’s AMI project represents a significant investment in the future of energy management. By harnessing the power of advanced technology and data analytics, MEC is committed to enhancing operational efficiency, optimizing energy usage, and ensuring a reliable and sustainable energy supply for its customers.
