Majuro, Marshall Islands – MEC would like to inform the public about an unscheduled power outage that occurred today due to a fuel leak on Generator 6 (G6) at the MEC Power Plant. As our largest output generator, G6 had to be shut down immediately for repairs, leading to a temporary decrease in our overall power generation capacity.
The shutdown of G6, combined with the unavailability of other generators currently awaiting major parts, left MEC without sufficient capacity to meet the island’s load demand. Consequently, we were forced to turn off power on Feeder 1 (F1) to balance the grid and ensure safety and stability in other areas.
We understand the inconvenience this outage may have caused and want to assure the community that our team at the power plant worked really hard to fix the leak as quickly as possible. The unscheduled outage lasted for approximately 2 hours, and power restoration on F1 commenced at 12:30 PM once the repairs were completed.
Some Key Points to Note:
- A fuel leak on G6 necessitated an immediate shutdown for repairs.
- G6 is MEC’s current largest output generator, and its shutdown led to inadequate generation capacity.
- Other generators are currently awaiting major parts, contributing to the generation capacity shortfall.
- Power on F1 was turned off to maintain grid stability.
- Power on F1 was fully restored by 1:20 PM.
MEC appreciates your understanding and patience as we continue to address these ongoing power issues. MEC remains committed to providing reliable power service to our community and is taking all necessary steps to expedite repairs and ensure the availability of all our generators.
In addition to our immediate repair efforts, we are also focused on long-term solutions to enhance our power infrastructure. We are currently working on rebuilding Power Station 1 to accommodate two new generators funded by the World Bank. These generators are expected to arrive in Majuro by late 2024 or early 2025. This upgrade is part of MEC’s broader strategy to increase our power generation capacity and improve service reliability.
Furthermore, thanks to recent funding commitment from the RMI Government, MEC will soon issue a bid for three more generators. These initiatives are crucial in our ongoing efforts to meet the growing power demands of our community and ensure a stable and uninterrupted power supply for the future.
