The Marshalls Energy Company (MEC) is announcing that its deployed team of meter technicians and inspectors has discovered numerous instances of meter tampering in Majuro. These unauthorized alterations compromise the integrity of the power grid and pose significant safety risks to the community.
To combat this ongoing and growing problem, MEC meter technicians and inspectors are conducting random and unannounced checks to revalidate every customer’s meter on Majuro, including both regular and prepaid/cash power meters. This proactive approach aims to identify and address any potential tampering issues promptly. Any individuals, buildings or businesses discovered engaging in these unauthorized activities will face immediate disconnection without prior notice given by MEC or KAJUR.
Additionally, culprits caught tampering with their meters or making illegal connections will be subject to hefty fines and back-billing charges for electricity consumed but not paid for. These fines and charges must be paid in full prior to the reconnection of electricity services. The amount to be paid will be a minimum of $1,500 and may increase up to $15,000 based on the severity of the offense. Furthermore, MEC reserves the right to take legal action against those responsible.
Following the discovery of multiple instances of meter tampering in Majuro, MEC will expand its meter inspection efforts to include the islands of Ebeye, Wotje, and Jaluit within the coming months. These visits will not be announced.
