With the pressing State of Emergency for Kili Island as decreed by President Hilda C. Heine, Marshalls Energy Company (MEC) is actively engaging in critical relief operations to mitigate the dire situation on the island.
In line with directives from the Cabinet and leveraging the initial funding anticipated from the Government, MEC is committed to executing prompt measures for the restoration and improvement of electricity and fuel services for Kili Island.
MEC has mapped out a support scheme to the Minister of Works, Infrastructure & Utilities, encompassing critical areas of need for Kili Island:
- Generator Repairs: MEC has initiated the procurement process for essential parts to repair at least one of Kili Island’s inoperable generators, with the objective of bolstering the power generation capacity without delay.
- Fuel Storage: MEC will supply the impaired shoreline fuel tank with a functional unit to assure the island’s fuel supply security.
- Fuel Line Repairs: To guarantee the unimpeded and safe delivery of fuel, MEC will carry out the replacement or rehabilitation of any corroded or damaged segments of the existing fuel import lines.
- Electricity Meters: As requested by the leadership, MEC will fast-track the purchase of cash power meters and necessary components, with a specialized team ready to implement installation upon the arrival of the equipment and availability of funding.
- MERAM Retrofit: MEC is set to expedite the retrofit of its fuel tanker vessel, MERAM, equipping it with the necessary enhancements to ensure the vessel can securely and efficiently deliver fuel to Kili Island. Modifications may include anchoring system improvements, discharge pump upgrades, and the deployment of floating hoses.
Understanding the severity and urgency of Kili Island’s power dilemma, MEC is actively working in concert with other government entities to provide the necessary interventions. The rapid and efficient support from MEC demonstrates our unwavering commitment to the communities we serve, particularly during times of dire need.
