The MARSHALLS ENERGY COMPANY, Inc, (MEC) currently has six Diesel powered thermal generation facilities located within the Marshall Islands with its major plants located on Majuro Atoll and Ebeye Island, in Kwajalein Atoll. This position is based in Majuro Atoll. The facility on Majuro Atoll utilizes Deutz (BV16M640), CAT (3616, 3612, 3512) generating sets. The generation facilities are undergoing rehabilitation of structures and equipment. The distribution system is currently being upgraded to include several Mega-Watts of distributed renewable generation and battery storage systems. The Majuro system has a peak demand of 10MW with a forecasted increase to a 16MW peak demand by 2030.

JOB SUMMARY:

Marshalls Energy Company is in search of an Electrical Engineer for our Marshall Islands Power Plants. This position will be responsible for the electrical side of service and maintenance of power plant generators, electrically powered systems and other operational control and monitoring equipment, reporting to management. With minimal supervision and significant autonomy, the typical areas of responsibility include safely performing planned & unplanned maintenance, operational efficiency, and providing first-line support for equipment troubleshooting. The ideal candidate will adapt procedures, processes, tools, equipment, and techniques to accomplish the requirements of the position. The person will also have to rely on experience and planning to ensure minimal interruptions of power supply to our customers. The country is remote and located in the central Pacific Ocean, therefore it can take a week or more to arrange physical technical assistance from suppliers, so the engineer must be capable of a wide range of skills and able to adapt to analyze and solve a wide range of complex issues.

Essential Functions for the Engineer for the Power systems:

  • Must have working experience with medium speed diesel generating sets in the 6MW to 2MW range.
  • Our medium speed generator systems output 13,800 volts with a transformed low voltage range from 120-480 volts at 60Hz.
  • Working knowledge of power plant control room systems including medium voltage switchgear and systems, Low voltage systems, DC voltage systems as well as protection, monitoring and signal systems.
  • Experience with Siemens S7 PLC systems, setup and adjustment is highly desirable.
  • Working knowledge of Distribution Station feeder breakers, controls, protection and monitoring systems.
  • Working knowledge of SCADA and Energy Management Systems (EMS) incorporating Battery Energy Storage Systems, and grid tied distributed Renewable Energy systems.
  • Lead inspection, repair and/or replacement of equipment and components with local staff.
  • Identify and diagnose maintenance problems, determine, and perform corrective action including disassembly, repair, overhaul, re-assembly, check-out, clean-up, and provide feedback for inventory records and engineering changes.
  • Must have operational experience with Master control and Supervisory control panels associated with containerized high speed generation units.
  • Identify and requisition materials, parts, supplies and equipment as necessary for the operation of the system and maintaining minimum inventory levels, in coordination with the procurement dept.
  • Accurately gather and prepare data/measurements for reports critical to system operations.
  • Assist in planning, estimating, and scheduling when requested.
  • Train and instruct employees in job duties, skills and company policies.
  • Troubleshooting and general electrical problems – diagnose source of trouble where one or more systems are involved to correct improper performance of equipment; select and use proper maintenance procedures; adjust, align, balance, repair, overhaul, rebuild, test, inspect all equipment.
  • Research and determine re-usability of parts in accordance with published manufacturer guidelines.
  • Prepare and submit detailed, complete and legible service reports of all inspection and repairs performed using prescribed forms and procedures in a timely manner.
  • Keep management regularly appraised of status of repair jobs
  • Maintain a professional and proper personal appearance at all times.
  • Keep up to date with developments in tooling, technologies and systems.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum Technical or trade school certification, diploma or a degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ industrial electrical experience in a Power Plant Electrical position or a Field Electrical position. Previous remote location or Pacific Island experience with little to no support is an advantage.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, detail oriented, and ability to work with a high level of accuracy.
  • Good computer skills using related information system applications (ex: SIS, DBS, iba).
  • Ability to perform duties with a sense of urgency, exceeding owner expectations.
  • Ability to be self-managed, motivated and work independently in a challenging service environment with no supervision.
  • Ability to use and knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
  • Ability to read and understand system technical manuals.
  • Must be able to pass a physical and PFT/FIT test, drug screening and background checks.
  • Hold a valid state motor vehicle operator’s license
  • Be able to obtain and maintain a passport and visas for international travel.
  • Have and maintain a current driver’s license and maintain a driving record (MVR) which adheres to the company’s motor vehicle policy standards.

Physical Requirements:

  • The location is a coral atoll environment, 7 degrees north of the equator with a warm, humid, tropical climate consistently in the 28 to 40 degrees Celsius temperature range.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time and able to lift 50 pounds regularly

  • Negative results to TB and AIDS screening
  • Police clearance – Required for work permits and travel requirements.
