The MARSHALLS ENERGY COMPANY, Inc, (MEC) currently has six thermal generation facilities located within the Marshall Islands with its major plants located on Majuro Atoll. This position is based in Majuro Atoll and relates to our two primary power plants with a combined output of 25MW. The facilties are undergoing rehabilitation and current works involve replacing most of the existing capacity with three new CAT 3500 and five 3600 series diesel generation equipment, with full RE capable control systems. MEC operates generators ranging from 6.4MW down to 15 kW in various shore based facilities and also operates a 6,000,000 gal capacity fuel storage farm along with a 52m long, 400T, 150,000 gal Landing Craft Tanker vessel servicing our remote outer island facilities.
Job Summary:
Marshalls Energy Company is in search of Reciprocating Engine Mechanics for our Marshall Islands Power Plants. These positions will be responsible for maintenance and service of engines & generation associated equipment as described in the scope of work reporting to the Mechanical Supervisor and Generation Manager. With minimal supervision and significant autonomy, the typical areas of responsibility include safely performing planned & unplanned maintenance, maintaining, and providing first-line support for equipment troubleshooting. The ideal candidates will adapt procedures, processes, tools, equipment, and techniques to accomplish the requirements of the position. They will also rely on experience and judgement to plan and achieve assigned tasks and goals.
Essential Functions:
- Must have a full working experience with the CAT ET Diagnostic & Servicing laptop
- Perform inspection, repair and/or replacement of equipment and components with minimum supervision as required for the completion of service contracts.
- Identify and diagnose maintenance problems, determine, and perform corrective action including disassembly, repair, overhaul, re-assembly, check-out, clean-up, and provide feedback for inventory records and engineering changes.
- Must have operational experience with Master control and Supervisory control panels.
- Identify and requisition materials, parts, supplies and equipment as necessary to perform the contract.
- Assist supervisor with directing service technicians that are assigned to the project.
- Provide guidance to crew in handling problems and in resolving escalated complaints or disputes.
- Accurately gather and prepare data/measurements for reports critical to unit operations.
- Accurately identify and assist supervisor with solving the problem.
- Assists in planning, estimating, and scheduling when requested.
- Train and instruct employees in job duties and company policies.
- Adhere to procedures and documentation as required to adequately record the work and critical engine parameters as determined during project completion.
- Troubleshooting and general mechanical – diagnose source of trouble where one or more systems are involved to correct improper performance of equipment; select and use proper maintenance procedures; adjust, align, balance, repair, overhaul, rebuild, test, inspect all equipment.
- Capable of working on engines, Heat Recovery Units, heat exchangers, pumps, fan compressors, blowers, controls, fuel oil systems.
- Machine shop practice – rebuilding heads, test injectors, work on pump shafts, impellers, bushings, sleeves, wear rings, slats, discs, guides, valves, pump bodies and other equipment requiring similar skill; make shrink fits, seat valves; perform metal spray overlays; cut keyways; fit and scrape bearings; perform other similar duties.
- Disassemble, adjust, install, and repair, in conjunction with both top end and major/in-frame overhauls, reciprocating engine based marine, industrial, and petroleum power systems in accordance with all prescribed quality and safety standards.
- Troubleshoot, problem solve, and identify the problem through failure analysis.
- Test, measure, align and adjust engine systems and components.
- Research and determine re-usability of parts in accordance with published manufacturer guidelines.
- Coordinate the ordering of replacement parts with supervisor.
- Prepare and submit detailed, complete and legible service reports of all inspection and repairs performed using prescribed forms and procedures in a timely manner.
- Keep supervisor regularly apprised of status of assigned repair jobs and assist in addressing customer questions and concerns.
- Maintain a professional and proper personal appearance at all times.
- Keep up to date with developments in tooling, technologies and systems.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Technical or trade school certification in related course.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a Power Plant Mechanic position or a Field Mechanic position.
- Solid working knowledge of CAT 3500 and 3600 series diesel engine mechanical and auxiliary systems with experience troubleshooting and performing top end and major overhauls on CAT 3500 and 3600 series engines.
- Experience or certifications primarily with CAT engines as well as with Deutz, Wartsila, Yanmar, and Cummins is a plus.
- Solid professional communication/interface skills with customer field personnel, onsite vendors, and other employees.
- Solid mechanical systems knowledge of diesel engines/engine failures and electrical and hydraulic systems.
- Proficient in the use of mechanical test equipment including CAT ET laptop and software.
- Excellent problem solving skills, detail oriented, and ability to work with a high level of accuracy.
- Good computer skills using related information system applications (ex: SIS, DBS).
- Ability to perform duties with a sense of urgency, exceeding owner expectations.
- Ability to be self-managed and work independently in a challanging service environment with little or no supervision.
- Ability to use and knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- High degree of mechanical ability and the ability to problem solve.
- Experience reading and understanding technical manuals.
- Ability to read and comprehend moderately difficult computer-based schematics, specifications, service and parts literature, technical bulletins, safety manuals, and other related publications.
- Ability to safely use equipment and tooling and wear company required PPE (protective eyewear, gloves, harnesses, footwear) during a shift assignment that could last between 12 and 15 hours in hot and confined spaces.
- Ability to understand and apply company safety rules, permit, and tag systems.
- Capable of safely driving commercial size truck, forklifts.
- Must be able to pass a drug screening and background check.
- Must be able to pass a physical and PFT/FIT test.
- Hold a valid state motor vehicle operator’s license
- Be able to obtain and maintain a passport and visa for international travel.
- Have and maintain a current driver’s license and maintain a driving record (MVR) which adheres to the company’s motor vehicle policy standards.
