Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) – MEC

How is my electricity bill calculated?

Your bill is calculated based on the amount of electricity you consume (measured in kilowatt-hours from the meter installed on your building) multiplied by the tariff rate of $ per kilowatt-hour.

Some meters have multipliers that MEC uses to calculate my electricity bill. What are those and why are they used?

Some electricity meters have multipliers for billing purposes in order to accurately measure and charge for the amount of electricity consumed. These multipliers are only used in situations where the meter reads part of the power being used, and the multiplier adds the rest of the power.  This is used when the meter is installed to monitor a large combined load, such as many electric motors and industrial equipment, large water pumps, and air conditioners.

How can I reduce my electricity bill?

Implement energy-efficient practices such as using LED bulbs, unplugging devices when not in use, and properly maintaining appliances. Consider upgrading to energy-efficient appliances and be mindful of your usage patterns.

What should I do in case of a power outage?

Report the outage to your utility provider immediately. Check if your neighbors are also affected. In the meantime, turn off sensitive electronic equipment to prevent damage when power is restored.

How do I read my electricity meter?

Electricity meters display usage in kilowatt-hours. Digital displays may show several different screens and then change every 4 seconds. Look for the screen that shows ‘Total kWh’. Read this number and also write down the date and time you take the reading. Take another reading the next day, recording the time and date. Subtract the new reading from the older reading, and the answer will be how much power you have used in the time between the two readings. Contact MEC at 625-3828 if you have any questions.

How can I report a suspected electrical problem or safety hazard?

If you notice sparks, exposed wires, or other safety hazards, contact MEC immediately at 625-3828. Turn off all breakers in your load center or panel box and unplug any sensitive electrical equipment Do not attempt to fix electrical or meter problems yourself, and keep a safe distance from any potential hazards.

Can I install solar panels on my property, and how will it affect my electricity bill?

Yes, you can install solar panels. At this time, MEC does not allow any personal or private solar panels to be connected to the grid. MEC does not have a net metering programming at this time, but it is something being considered.
