Health & Safety is important to everyone and is a core value for the MEC’s Petroleum department. We are committed to protecting the environment, and the health and safety of all who share it. Petroleum is becoming an increasingly safer place to work, despite a job environment that often involves heavy equipment, hazardous materials, high temperatures and high pressure equipment.
Safety is and will always be Petroleum’s primary focus, and the workers who serve on the frontlines of our operations play an essential role in ensuring safe work practices and preventing workplace incidents. Each worker at a worksite has a duty to work in a safe manner and must make safety a part of each and every task.
The Petroleum department which handles all fuel services and deliveries has established a concise readiness plan to meet all expectations when accidents do occur. To allow the process to work, ship crew and shore personnel conduct drills and safety exercises as appropriate to instill a culture of readiness when incidents do occur.
Safety drills are conduct every two (2) months to enable our crew to get onboard our safety actions.
Understanding best safety practices and being trained in the tasks you are to perform prior to reaching the job site is essential to assure the safety of yourself and those around you. As one of many training opportunities available, MEC’s SAFETY FIRST concept provides convenient and localized trainings that ensure that our workers work hard in a safe environment.
PPE compliance is at the center of our safety first drive to ensure everyone work and share the same safety concerns. Specialized trainings are also available from our partners in the petroleum industry and we take full advantage of these opportunities to train our workers. PPE is a standard requirement across all of MEC’s departments and operations, it is non-negotiable and cannot be compromised in any way.
APPA safety manual covers all safety concerns otherwise to provide immediate safety information in our daily activities and as a guide for safety protocol. Meanwhile specific industry needed courses are also being undertaken from OSHA.com.
Marine Safety & Distribution of Petroleum Products
MEC recently acquired ownership of a Landing Craft bunkering vessel (LC Meram) which will allow fuel service delivery to the outer islands in the RMI and within the region, to nearby countries. With increased business activity Safety becomes all the more relevant in our operations.
As our business grows our safety efforts are climbing to new heights to counter the threats to ourselves and property so we serve our values and objectives to serve our purpose.
Cargo Description
Cargo description and what do in the events of any accident are important to guide decision making during these events. Regulations on Petroleum Products, Specifications and Standards are usually displayed in all areas of petroleum operations to assist and guide the proper remedies in these events.
Cargo specifications are always displayed so any accidents can properly addressed and identify remedial action to counteract, alleviate and reduce danger to personnel and property.
Safety drills are essential to maintain adherence and responsibility during disasters. MEC conducts safety excercises to remind procedures and to keep on top of prescribed satefy operations. Safety maps and safety instructions displayed in all areas of MEC are important and they should guide anyone within the vicinity of any affected area.
Safety Drills
Evacuation drills are an essential part of emergency preparedness because they identify weaknesses, build muscle memory with regular practice. They Increase effectiveness with the actual evacuation in a real crisis, potentially saving lives.
Drills Empower individuals of potential threats and empower individuals to take a greater role in their own safety. They also let neighborhoods identify their primary, secondary, and tertiary escape routes and test that the neighborhoods understand and use the various evacuation notification systems.
Regular drills also allow MEC to comply with regulatory requirement from the Environment Protection Authority (EPA). Our Petroleum team works closely with local authorities, Fire Department and the National Disaster Committee to build coordination and cooperation.
