Stay Safe Around Power Lines: A Public Safety Reminder from ME
At MEC, the safety of our customers and the general public is our top priority. As part of our ongoing commitment to public safety, we want to raise awareness about the importance of staying safe around power lines, an essential but potentially hazardous part of our electrical infrastructure.
Power lines carry electricity that powers homes, businesses, and communities. While they serve a vital purpose, power lines can pose serious risks if not treated with caution and respect. Whether you’re at home, at work, or out and about in your neighborhood, it’s crucial to be mindful of the potential dangers associated with power lines.
Here are some important safety tips to keep in mind when you’re near power lines:
1. Maintain a Safe Distance: Always assume that power lines are energized and dangerous. Keep a safe distance of at least 10 feet away from overhead power lines when working or playing outdoors. Never attempt to touch or approach a downed power line – instead, report it immediately to MEC at 625-3828 or KAJUR at 329-3799.
2. Look Up and Look Out: When working on projects around your property, such as trimming trees, cleaning gutters, or using ladders, make sure to look up and be aware of any nearby power lines. Accidental contact with power lines can result in serious injuries or even fatalities.
3. Be Cautious with Metal Objects: Metal conducts electricity, so avoid using metal ladders, tools, or other equipment near power lines. Even non-metallic objects, such as pool cleaning poles or antennas, can conduct electricity if they come into contact with a power line.
4. Stay Safe During Storms: During severe weather, power lines may be damaged or knocked down by high winds or falling debris. Stay indoors during storms, and if you see a downed power line, stay away and immediately call MEC at 625-3828 or KAJUR at 329-3799.
5. Educate Children and Teens: Teach children and teenagers about the dangers of power lines and the importance of safety around electricity. Discourage climbing trees near power lines, playing with kites or drones near power lines, and other risky behaviors.
By following these safety tips and being aware of the potential hazards associated with power lines, you can help ensure the safety of yourself, your loved ones, and your community. Remember, when it comes to power lines, safety always comes first.
At MEC and KAJUR, we are committed to promoting a culture of safety and raising awareness about the importance of electrical safety in our community. Together, we can all play a role in preventing accidents and staying safe around power lines. Thank you for your attention to this important public safety message from MEC and KAJUR.
